Project Management is undoubtedly one of the more lucrative professions globally. By 2035, it is estimated that there will be a gap of 30 million project professionals. This is a profession that spans industries and is therefore very stable. Contrary to what many people think, this is not a profession that AI can easily replace; the value-add of project managers is providing the human touch and insight to project work.
Given the upcoming need, there are definitely a lot of professionals who want to pursue project management as a profession. So how do you get ahead of the rest? Besides having the right experience, it is also a good idea to carry the right certifications. Having certifications – especially in the field of project management – further validates your skills and competencies. It lessens the risk of companies hiring project professionals as it ascertains the capability of the candidate. Of course, this is not completely guaranteed, but it’s a good enough indicator.
There are many project management certifications available. These include the likes of PMI certifications, PRINCE2, ISO 21502, Google PM, etc. Each of these certifications have their advantages, whether it be the extent of acceptability, costs, ease of acquiring, and global recognition. However, ultimately, our personal recommendation is to go with a certification offered by the Project Management Institute. This is because PMI certifications are the gold standard in project management and are the most highly sought-after certifications. They are recognized globally and can significantly boost your chances of getting ahead. The most prestigious of all is the Project Management Professional (PMP). This is considered THE Project Management Certification.
So, how do you get this type of certification, especially if you are based in the Philippines?
To be certified by PMI, you need to pass the certification exam. These exams can be taken at any Pearson-Vue authorized center. Luckily, there are around twelve in Metro Manila, two in Cebu, one in Baguio, and one in Davao as of this writing. To be eligible to take the PMP exam, there are two basic prerequisites:
- Three Years of project management-related experience (for college graduates) or Five Years (for high school graduates). A common misconception is that you have to have the title of “project manager”. This is not true. What PMI is looking for is experience in project management – not the title. During the application process, applicants will be required to narrate their project experience for PMI to validate their claim. The three (or five) years of experience do not have to be with one organization, nor does it have to be just one project. It doesn’t even have to be one continuous three (or five) years of experience. What is important is that there is a total of three (or five) years within a period of ten years to become eligible.
- Thirty-Five (35) contact hours of project management education. As of this writing, this can be taken from any training organization offering project management-related education. However, PMI has already mentioned that they will be limiting acceptable face-to-face training to PMI Authorized Training Providers (ATP) starting Q4 of 2026. This is to ensure that the quality of education received by would-be professionals is up to standard.
What are the advantages of learning with a PMI authorized training partner (ATP)?
An ATP undergoes a thorough review of its capability to conduct proper project management education. Their instructors also attend training and are tested for their knowledge before they are awarded a trainer badge. If you are taking official review courses with them, you are guaranteed to have the most up-to-date knowledge on project management and content that is aligned to the certification exams you are preparing for.
In the Philippines, there are only a handful of authorized training partners. You can search them in the PMI ATP director here. Crossworks Training and Consulting Corp is one of the first in the Philippines to be an ATP. Before this, Crossworks was formerly a Registered Education Provider (REP), the precursor to the ATP. It specializes in project management training and is considered one of the best, if not the best, project management training centers in the Philippines. This is due to the high number of project management trainings it conducts per year and the expertise of its project management trainers, led by none other than Mr. Joey Mallari – the Corporate Mechanic. Crossworks has been teaching project management to professionals of various industries and customizes project management training to suit the specific needs of its customers.
So if you’re thinking of getting your PMI certification, the first step is to approach a PMI Authorized Training Partner. Approach Crossworks, and they will guide you in moving your career forward.
